All I remember as a kid from any episode with Lwaxana Troi was that she was super annoy and I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could watch one with some action. And while I still think her character is a bit much she is definitely more amusing with a bit of maturity on my part. The B story about how Diana's fiance is psychically in love with the woman from his dreams is still goofy as hell, but at least it pays off the fact that his character is a doctor. The fiance's parents are the only ones who seem to feel free to tell Lwaxana what they think about her which makes them probably my favorite characters in the episode by default.
The Enterprise arrives at planet Haven for some shore leave when Diana is called to the transporter. A box with a silver face announces to her that her wedding party will be coming aboard shortly. She explains to the captain and Riker that it is Betazoid tradition to have arranged marriages and she will be leaving the ship. Riker is crushed and she goes to meet her groom. Meanwhile Haven calls up to say a ship has entered their space and is refusing to respond to hails. They request that the Enterprise take care of it which seems perfectly reasonable, but Picard seems annoyed for whatever reason. Diana meets her fiance, but can tell he is disappointed. He and his parents leave and her month arrives with her servant. There is some comedy about Picard having to carry Lwaxana's bag and treating him as a lesser person.
Diana meets with her fiance Wyatt and he explains that he has dream his whole life of a specific woman and she isn't her. But he still love her and they seem to hit it off pretty well. The unknown ship comes into range it is of a race destroyed by a plague with no known cure. The people on Haven want it taken care of but Picard ignores them. There is a dinner to plan the wedding at the parents keep constantly fighting until first Riker and then Diana storm out. They meet in the holodeck and are followed shortly there after by Wyatt. Riker leaves and it seems Wyatt got things taken care of and even got Lwaxana to shut up.
Then the plague ship arrives and Picard tractor beams it. They finally respond to a hail and the woman from Wyatt's dreams is on the bridge! He comes up with a plan to beam medical supplies over but when the time comes he knocks on the transporter operator with a hypo and beams himself over to be with the literal woman of his dreams. His medical skills may even help cure them all. Diana seems relieved to go back to her life and Lwaxana is crude to the captain one more time.
Review: Never going to be my favorite episode, but a lot better than I remembered. I expected to be giving this a 2 or 3, but it fared better with time than I expected. Some decent humor bits, especially with Picard made this one a solid average episode.
