I remember each part of this episode, but I had completely forgotten that the episode that introduces DS9, the episode that introduces Data's dreams, and the one where Worf finds the camp full of Klingons all happened in one episode. Well, technically two episodes since the Worf story especially isn't exactly finished. Also I definitely recall being kinda disappointed with how the Worf part of the story resolved in part II, but I also don't remember any of the details so maybe I am wrong. I really enjoyed the interactions between Julian Bashir and Data, it makes me wish they had found a way to bring Data over to DS9 as well, but I guess they already had Worf and O'Brien which isn't a bad deal.
The episode opens with a shot of the Enterprise docked to DS9 and then Picard and Beverley walking on the promenade discussing holosuites and how Picard doesn't have time since he is working on an aquaduct project. Then we see Geordi and Worf getting a meal together only Geordi finds it unpalatable and leaves. A rat faced alien approaches Worf and offers to sell him information about his father. He claims Mogh still alive in a prison camp. Worf refuses to believe him and storms off. Back on the Enterprise Data detects an energy drain coming from sickbay and heads down to investigate. He finds Dr. Bashir trying to connect a device from the Gamma Quadrant to ships computer for analysis. Data suggests that rather than using the sickbay computer they take it to engineering to analyse there. Bashir agrees and they head down.
On the bridge Worf is barely able to hold it together yelling first at an ensign and then at Riker. He heads back to his quarters to do some tai chi (or whatever the Klingons call their version) but ends up smashing a glass table. Down in engineering Bashir is fascinated by Data, how is hair grows, how he breaths and generally how much work his creator put into making him human. They connect the mystery gear up to the ships core for power and it blasts Data with a plasma beam the knocks him out. But instead of just being not conscious Data has a vision of his father as a blacksmith. Data doesn't know what to do with this and consults with Worf. Worf tells him that a vision of ones father is extremely significant to a Klingon and that it must be investigated fully. This serves the dual purpose of setting Data to work researching and Worf on the hunt for his father. Data's final consultation is with the captain who suggests rather than looking out he needs to look in for answers.
Worf returns to DS9 and after some threats gets the rat faced guy to take him to the planet with the prison camp. Data spends some time painting and realizes he really needs to try having a vision again. This time Bashir and La Forge are both monitoring him for safety and he jumps in. This time the dream is much longer and Dr. Soong explains to Data that he put this capability in his neural net for when he was ready. Data awakens and realizes Dr. Soong gave him the ability to dream. Worf meanwhile arrives on the prison planet and has to sneak through the jungle to find the camp. He encounters a lone Klingon woman bathing in the jungle but she is taken back by an armed Romulan. He goes into the camp itself and encounters an old Klingon. The elder tells Worf that Mogh did in fact die but that the rest of them aren't leaving, and neither is he. Worf tries to escape but is stopped by Romulan guards, TO BE CONTINUED
Review: This half episode is really entertaining. It is a nice introduction for DS9 and also a really cool story about Data learning to dream. The part about the Klingons feels much less like a whole story and I won't really be able to judge it until I finish with Part II tomorrow.
