DS9: Past Tense, Part II

Part II did pretty much exactly what I thought it would do given the events of Part I, and that isn't really a bad thing. The hostage situation in Part I didn't look like it was going to turn out well and it didn't overall, but Sisko managed to get the message to the people before getting to fake his death and get history back on the right path. The bits with Kira and O'Brien beaming back to the same spot in various periods of history is clearly only there for comic relief, but at least the part with the Hippies was entertaining. I can't help but wonder if Sisko got a visit from the time travel police after this episode...
We begin right where we left off with Sisko and Biddle fighting to control the hostage situation. A guard named Vin bursts in with a gun and Sisko tackles him before anyone can get hurt, and of course Biddle just wants to kill the guy. Biddle demands that Vin give him access to their internet but he refuses, luckily another guard agrees before anyone gets hurt. Michael Webb, the resistance leader Sisko met with last episode shows up and Sisko talks Biddle into letting him in on the plan. On the Defiant O'Brien and Kira start beaming into different time periods to look for their friends and don't have much luck but do have some fun along the way. Biddle tells Sisko and Webb his plan, trade the hostages for their release, a bunch of money and a flight to Tasmania. Sisko manages to convince him to let Webb talk to the authorities over the net and demand an end to the Sanctuary districts. He can't get through to anyone but a police detective who talks him into a personal meeting. She agrees to give them food and pass on their demands but there isn't much hope.
Dax meanwhile has figured out they are in the Sanctuary and manages to sneak in through the sewers (her easy access in and out is clearly the most unreasonable thing in this episode, but I guess she reprogrammed her ID or something). She is captured but Biddles men but he is mostly disappointed when he learns she knows Sisko and Bashir already. Vin tries to get himself killed again and Sisko has to pull him aside and tell him to shut up so he can save Vin's life. Sisko convinces Dax to convince her media friend to get them access to the net so they can share their stories about what has happened in the Sanctuary. Kira and O'Brien find Dax finally but before they can rescue Sisko the national guard shows up and starts killing hostage takers. Sisko gets shot saving Vin, but earns his gratitude so he sneaks Bashir and Sisko out of he Sanctuary reporting them dead. They get back to their own time and everything is back to normal other than Sisko's picture being in the history books an Gabriel Bell, martyred leader of a new civil rights movement.

Review: It is wild how often second parts of two parters are disappointing, but not this time. Sure it is a bit goofy, but isn't that what time travel stories are all about? Overall a satisfying episode.
