Klingon episodes in DS9 have been a bit hit or miss so far, but this one is largely a hit. The sage of Worf's brother Kurn began in TNG and resolves here with the classic television solution of erasing his memory and giving him a new life. First of all, if Worf actually believes in Klingon spiritualism why would he curse his brother this way? And if he doesn't believe in it why be willing to kill him in the first place? I guess he might have just agreed to kill Kurn because he knew Kurn at least thought it was the right thing to do, but still.
The episode opens with Worf fighting/flirting with Jadzia on the holosuite. He is called to the airlock by Worf, there is a drunk Klingon there demanding his presence. Worf shows up and finds his brother Kurn stumbling around. Right in front of Odo Kurn demands that Worf kill him, but I guess Odo wasn't listening or something. We next see Kurn waking up hungover in Worf's quarters. Kurn explains that after Worf refused to join the war their family was removed from the council, stripped of its land and honor. He demands that Worf kill him since this is apparently the only way for him to regain his place in the afterlife. We cut briefly to Kira and O'Brien returning to Bajoran space on a runabout. They experience some kind of explosion. Then it happens again and a Klingon ship appears. The Klingons warn them to leave and they wisely listen. Back on the station Dax is at Quarks wondering where Worf is and asks Quark. He explains Worf angrily bought a specific kind of incense and she figures it out and summons Odo to his quarters. They arrive just as Worf sinks a knife into his brothers chest.
Dax beams Kurn to the infirmary and Bashir saves his life. Both Sisko and Kurn are super disappointed in Worf. Worf manages to get Kurn a job in station security and Odo is pleased with his performance. O'Brien and Kira take the Defiant to investigate the explosion. This time they encounter a crippled Klingon ship. They offer aid which is at first refused, but then the Klingons agree to be towed to DS9. Sisko quickly figures out that the Klingons are planting mines along the border of Bajoran space and Worf comes up with a plant to find out for sure. He convinces Kurn to join him. The two are surgically altered and sneak on to the ship. They encounter and officer who Kurn kills and reveals had a knife ready to stab Worf. They get the information but Worf is super upset he couldn't feel the Klingons intent to kill him.
Now knowing where the mines are they return with the Defiant and after a warning detonate the entire minefield. A small fleet of Klingon ships decloak and flee back to Klingon space with their tails between their legs. Kurn though is suicidal. Worf talks him down but realizes he needs to do something. Jadzia comes up with a plan. They erase his memory, alter his DNA and his appearance. They get one of the Klingons on the ship to adopt him as his son. Worf says an emotional good bye to his brother never to see him again.
Review: An emotional episode with a few problems. The story with Worf and Kurn sneaking on to the Klingon ship felt a little silly, and then one of the Klingons from that ship agrees to be Kurn's new father? The whole erasing his memory only seems to cause more problems than it solves. Honestly the entire minefield B story was pretty weak.
