I did manage to watch this yesterday, but the internet was particularly unavailable last night so I am writing both yesterday's episode and today's all at once. So it may get a bit rushed. Both of these episodes felt like fairly classic episodes with this one feeling rather TNG/DS9 and the following episode much more TOS. This is by far the most Kim-centric episode in the series so far and honestly I liked it more than I expected. Kirk and Picard and honestly Janeway are so self confident that they would have handled this very differently. It is fun to see the science nerd guy get brought out of time and have to figure a way out.
The episode opens with Kim awaking on earth in bed with his fiance. He is startled and not sure what is happening but every body insists he has a big meeting that day. He gets out the door and runs into a barista who hands him a coffee and sends him on his way. He goes to the meeting which turns out to be for a bunch of admirals and he is there specifically to explain a system he designed, but when the time comes he calls off the meeting. He stops by his office and figures out that he is working on a new runabout and that a friend of his got stuck on Voyager instead of him. He has to ask the barista for directions back to his apartment and his fiance is distraught that he walked out on his meeting, and even more that he doesn't think he should be there. He uses his command codes to access the personnel records for Voyager and learns Paris wasn't on board either.
Kim heads to France and finds Paris in the bar he recreated on Voyager and tries to talk him into helping, but Tom isn't having it. When he gets home there are security agents there who take him in for questioning. It seems they don't appreciate him using what appears to be stolen codes to get access to records and even less like him visiting convicted treasonist Tom Paris. They don't believe his story and he is forced to wear a tracking anklet. He runs into the Barista again who is apparently an alien sent to keep an eye on him. It seems he ran into one of their time strands and ended up in a different reality. He gives Kim a copy of the data on where the strands are.
At home Kim tampers with his anklet which alerts security and he flees through the streets. Just as he is caught Paris shows up and knocks the security guy out. The two escape to Kim's office and Kim releases his test runabout. The two beam to it and barely escape for space dock only to be chased down by a much larger ship. Kim stalls in and realizes he needs to do a transport to nowhere to make it work. The runabout is destroyed but Kim finds himself back in his timeline and gets rescued, but Paris.
Review: A fun fish out of water episode that gives us a lot of back story on what Kim is so desperate to get home to.
6 out of 10
