TNG: Bloodlines

I know this is the time in the show where they wrap up the unfinished story threads from earlier in the series, but did we really need a story to wrap up Bok? I mean, I understand that he still holds a grudge, but it seems wildly over the top for him to come up with a complicated plot to create a genetic fake son for Picard just so he could kill him to devastate Picard. Also presumably Jason knew about what had happened and was willing to let himself be killed I guess? I am not sure how the plan really pays off for him either way, plus it seems like it was going to get figured out at some point. Also, just like Into Darkness, if you can new transport across star systems isn't that a total game changer? Even if it has risks why wouldn't that just be immediately used to invade the entire galaxy?
The episode opens with an unmanned probe appearing and sending a holographic image of Bok, the father of the Ferengi Picard killed years earlier, appears and threatens to kill the son Picard never knew he had. They start searching for the potential son at the last place his mother was known to be. Picard tells Riker it is possible he could be his son and they won't know until they find him. They get to his planet but are unable to locate him at first but eventually he is found deep underground in an unstable cave. Picard has him beamed aboard and he agrees to a genetic test. The test shows he is Picards son and the two start to get to know each other but Jason is understandably a bit standoffish.
Picard contacts the Ferengi authorities who confirm Bok is no longer a DaiMon but that he is also free from prison. Bok himself appears in Picard's quarters and Geordi confirms it isn't a holograph again, he can somehow teleport huge distances. Jason and Picard start getting along better but Picard learns he is a criminal back home and is disappointed with himself for not helping to raise him. He also learns Jason has a degernative genetic disorder he presumably got from his mother. Bok keeps taunting Picard and eventually beams Jason to his ship. After getting some pressind news from Dr. Crusher Picard gets Geordi to try an experimental long range transport and he appears on the Ferengi ship. He explains to the other Ferengi that Bok has tricked them, he never had a bounty to pay and Bok has been stripped of his rank. Also Bok resequenced Jason's DNA, he isn't Picard's son at all. They decide their best course is to turn Bok in to the authorities. Picard says a nice good bye to Jason and agrees to look him up the next time he is in the area.

Review: It is late at night already so this has been a somewhat short write up, but I don't think I really skipped anything important. It is certainly a better story than the other Picard son story Nemesis, but some would call that damning by faint praise.
