I guess if any minor character deserved a wrap up story it was Ensign Ro. Having her turn traitor against the Federation may not have been the path I would have liked to see, but she does clearly have some real reasons to hate the Cardassians. Also Picard insisting that she has to either carry out her mission or he, the one person she cares about, will bring her up on charges. Wow. Not much room for her to make the morally "correct" move. By setting her up with the the Maquis I have to wonder if they were considering her for a role in Voyager.
The episode opens with the senior staff gathered in Ten Forward to celebrate now Lt. Ro returning from tactical training. Picard pulls her aside when he notices she isn't having a great time. He expresses how proud he is of her accomplishments and she expresses thanks for him recommending her. They are both called to the bridge by Riker, a Cardassian vessel is being attacked and requesting aid. They rush in and find the ship being attacked by small Federation attack ships. Picard manages to drive them off and figures it was a Maquis. The Cardassian captain expresses to Picard that he doesn't think the Federation is really trying to stop the threat. Picard meets with Admiral Nechayev and she is clearly worried they aren't making enough progress. He plan is to send an infiltrator into the Maquis to lure them into a trap. The infiltrator she has in mind is Lt. Ro.
Laren isn't exactly excited about this assignment, but she agrees to do it. We next see her in civilian clothes in a seedy bar. She makes out with a sketchy alien when Data and Worf come looking for her. One of the guys at the bar lies and tells them she left. After Data and Worf leave Ro talks to the guy and tells him she killed a Cardassian soldier and is now wanted. He stuns her and she wakes up being interrogated by three Maquis. The leader, Macias, seems to want to trust her but the other two do not. Her story checks out though and they let her join their ranks. She takes a small ship and sneaks back into Federation space before sneaking through the Enterprise shields and stealing a bunch of medical supplies. The Maquis are impressed and seem to fully trust her. She spends a lot of time talking with Macias and learns his colony was also taken over by Cardassians and that he has a lot of love for Bajoran culture. In some ways he seems to be becoming a father figure to her.
Now trusted by the Maquis Ro slips back to the Enterprise and meets with Picard. He wants her to set up the Maquis to attack a convoy while Federation ships wait in a nearby nebula to spring out and catch them. She agrees but after she returns the Cardassians sneak in disguised as civilians and massacre many of her friends including Macias. In her final meeting before the mission Ro tells Picard she doesn't want to go through with the mission but Picard makes it clear she has no other option and sends Riker to go with her to make sure there aren't any fuck ups. As they approach the convoy Ro pulls a phaser on Riker and then blasts particles into the nebula revealing the Federation ships. The Maquis flee and she is beamed over to one of there ships never to be seen again.
Review: This is in all honesty probably the best of the individual character wrap up episodes. I have fond memories of All Good Things and I really hope they are correct. Next Gen movies are after that (ugh) and then DS9!
