This episode is an interesting hybrid of a DS9 character episode and a more TNG style science fiction mystery. It is the first time we see Sisko even show interest in a woman which is a good sign that he is finally ready to move on after the loss of his wife. But it is also the story of the wife of an eccentric terraformer's wife who creates a projection of herself to cope with problems with her marriage. In classic DS9 style the various other characters drop in and add to the story, but really it is all about Sisko in this one.
The episode opens with Sisko up late at night realizing it is the anniversary of his wife's death. He and Jake share a nice moment before Ben wanders off to the promenade to stare out the windows. He is approached by a beautiful woman named Fenna and the two of them hit it off immediately. She seems interested in a tour of the station but has to run off unexpectedly. The next morning Sisko is in the kind of mood no one at ops has ever seen before. He gets called by Dax to greet a visiting terraformer whose next project is t restart a star. That night he runs into Fenna again but she again disappears before he can ask her about herself, only this time she disappears right before his eyes. He goes to Odo but without much to go by it may take a while to figure out who she is.
The next day Sisko and the command staff visit the terraforming professor for dinner but Ben is immediately distracted by his wife who looks just like Fenna. When he tries to talk to her about it she denies knowing anything about what may have happened. The next day he meets Fenna again and gets Dax to come with a tricorder. She finds that Fenna isn't really a person and is some kind of energy field or projection. The professor rushes in, his wife has collapsed. Sisko manages to get him alone and he admits he knows about Fenna, she is some sort of psychic projection brought on by his wife being really unhappy about their marriage. Before they can stop him the professor takes his shuttle and crashes into the dead star reigniting it and making Fenna disappear.
Review: I am super tired so the summary is a little short, but it is a decent episode. Most of the good bits are dealing with the loss Sisko still feels but how he may be ready to find love again. The scifi bits could have used some work, but they don't ruin the episode.
5 out of 10
