Finally the multi-part episode comes to an end, and a fairly satisfying end at that. Having seen the rest of the show I knew that they were going to retake the station from the rebels, but since it was the beginning of a season the original audience probably figured that too. Never the less they manage to achieve and impressive level of tension. The Quark/Rom subplot is enjoyable as usual and we start to see why O'Brien is so awesome. In fact before this episode we only had occasional mentions of maybe being a battle here and there, but he is developing in the grizzled veteran they desperately need in situations like this.
Starting where the last episode ended Sisko is meeting with the Federation crew on the station and explaining the situation. He won't blame any of them for leaving but he is staying to resist. None of them leave, but we see that almost everybody else is getting out. Jake and Nog say goodbye and we see Quark has decided the best thing to do is start selling seats. There is a rush at an airlock where too many people show up to try and get on, people who bought seats from Quark. Li manages to calm them down. Kira and Dax take the evidence of Cardassian involvement and get dropped off on a moon to try and get an old fighter craft to take them to Bajor. The plan is to present the evidence to the council of ministers and get them to back down from the coup.
The rebels arrive at the station and find it empty. General Krim is in charge and very suspicious but Colonel Day insists in calling minister Jaro to brag about their success. But their glory is short lived, the security grid has been sabotaged and they start losing power across the station. Sisko and the others are hiding in the conduits where scanners don't work anyway. Things are going well for Kira and Dax who get the fighter flying, but as soon as they make it into space they are attacked. They manage to make it into Bajor's atmosphere and shoot down one of their pursuers but are themselves shot down and Kira breaks her hip. Luckily they are captured by Vedek Bareil's forces and taken to his monastery. Kira wakes up a few hours later in the monastery and together with Dax and Bareil they head to the ministry.
On DS9 Bashir leads a team who capture a group of the Rebels and Sisko uses a holosuite to trap a group lead by Colonel Day. Sisko tells Day about the Cardassian plot but when he beams Day back to ops he doesn't tell any of it to General Krim. On Bajor Kira makes it to the ministers. Not shocking Jaro rejects the evidence out of hand but seeing that the other ministers feel differently Vedek Winn takes Kira's side and they go into recess. Word gets to DS9 and Li and Sisko show up in ops. Krim is outraged that Day didn't tell him about the Cardassians and turns command of the station over to Sisko. Day tries to kill Sisko with his phaser but Li jumps in his way and is killed instead.
Review: A solid conclusion to a tense set of episodes. DS9 is finally coming into its own and the characters are starting to shine. I especially liked O'Brien in this one and you can see they are starting to build his friendship with Bashir.
