A really prefer how DS9 manage to tell a hard boiled detective story without resorting to setting the whole thing on the holosuite or something like TNG would insist on doing. Also no one carries around a giant Sherlock Holmes pipe which is obviously a good thing. It is also really nice to see Odo finally find some companionship, even if it is only for a short time. Also the way Kira reacts shows that even though she hasn't expressed any interest in Odo romantically so far, she is probably interested. The mysterious Orion Syndicate also makes another appearance on DS9 and honestly I am glad they were always kept (to my memory at least) as an ominous threat never really given a face, but always lurking behind the scenes.
We open with an alien man being confronted by two thugs looking for something and when the two don't find it they kill the first guy leaving a mark on the carpet. Back at Odo's Julian is getting his friends ready to play roles in his secret agent fantasy holosuite program and despite some pushing by Julian Odo isn't interested. He is however interested in a woman sitting at the bar getting hassled by Quark. He walks up to her and she assumes he is hitting on her and flirts right back, but quickly realizes this isn't exactly a casual contact when he explains he is head of security. Never the less he points out where she can find him if interested a few times before almost walking directly into a column on his way out.
Later that day she does make an appearance in his office, after being arrested for trying to break into the station computer. She eventually tells him that she is looking for her lost daughter and that the man we saw killed in the opening was trying to help her. She and Odo make their way to his quarters, but he isn't there. Not actually true, his remains are burned into the carpet and she admits she isn't looking for her daughter. She is working for the Orion Syndicate and is trying desperately to get out. Odo puts her in his quarters for safety while he continues to investigate. That night the two of them sleep together and he admits to her it is the first time he has been with a humanoid.
The next morning Odo has arranged a meeting with Starfleet Intelligence to try and resolve the situation, but before they can get much farther an agent from her government shows up, she is a covert agent with replaced memories. But at the same time she has made a deal with her old boss and meets with the two thugs from the opening. She gives them what they want but rather than let her go they pull a gun. Luckily Odo gets there first and beats up both the thugs. However once her memories are restored she realizes she has a husband and family which is crushing news to Odo. She also tells him she was/is in love with him though which honestly probably doesn't help.
Review: It is nice to see the shows least human character get a bit more human. The story of the agent with the erased memories is pretty generic Trek, but the first love aspect of it raises it above the average episode to me.
