DS9: Soldiers of the Empire

Hold on just a second, a Dax Klingon episode that I actually really like? And she is actually great in this episode since this week we get nothing but kickass Dax. As a kid Klingons were understandably my favorite of the Trek races (it may actually be the Romulans these days, but whatever) and it is episodes like that that justify how much I liked them. Also Klingon ships are super cool and that hasn't changed one bit. Instead of the pristine suburban looking Starfleet ships, they are gritting warships most reminiscent of modern submarines. The rough and tumble command structure seems like it would have issues, but I guess the vikings managed to make it for a long time...
We begin with Martok being treated for a wound by Bashir who keeps bugging him about pretty much everything. After Martok tells Worf that he has been assigned the job of tracking down a crippled Klingon ship and he wants Worf as his first mate. Worf asks Sisko for permission to go and after some convincing Sisko agrees. Worf prepares to say goodbye to Dax in the airlock but she follows him on board, she is going too as science officer. Worf accepts the crews battle record after noting the lack of victories which shames the crew. The crew are dispiritedly eating in mess hall and Dax asks about the blood wine which they inform her they lack. She raises there spirits with the news she brought a few barrels along with her from the station.
They are called away from the mess hall by the alarm signalling they have cloaked. The crew rush to the bridge, a Jem'Hadar ship has been spotted patrolling but Martok refuses to attack since it isn't their assigned mission. Later that day Dax has to shoot one of them with her phaser to stop a fight over the refusal to fight in the mess hall. She tells Worf he has a serious problem, but he refuses to turn against Martok. Finally they find the crippled ship but it is on the other side of the Cardassian border so Martok again refuses to do anything. Worf and Dax discuss challenging Martok for command, but Worf's hand is forced, the crew are preparing to mutiny. Instead Worf orders them to prepare for battle. Martok charges onto the bridge demanding to know why his orders are being ignored. Worf challenges him as a coward and they fight. Worf allows Martok to stab him in the stomach and collapses. Martok leads the ship to victory again a Jem'Hadar vessel and rescues the survivors. Back on DS9 Martok thanks Worf for what he did and invites him to join the house of Martok.

Review: There are the barest hints of a B story in this one with Bashir having to take over Worf's duties in intelligence which he finds a lot more boring than his fantasy life as a spy. Overall this is a great Klingon episode with both Dax and Worf at their very best.
