The second to last episode of the series manages to not feel entirely like a setup episode and if you have been reading the other entries I think that is a very good thing. It is also a relief knowing it won't be long until I get to watch the conclusion. Of course the arrival on its heals of VOY is going to be rough, but I am prepared. I feel like I have been saying this a lot, but Damar's rise to revolutionary leader of Cardassia actually feels earned in a way I didn't expect from him when he was first introduced as Dukat's aide. Speaking of, it has been a while since we have heard from Dukat, but I am pretty sure he and Winn both get conclusions tomorrow.
The episode opens with the arrival of the USS Sao Paulo which is promptly renamed the Defiant in honor of the lost vessel. Also sexual tension continues between Ezri and Julian. Cut Damar, Garak and Kira arriving at Cardassia. Damar has gotten most of the military leaders to agree to join his uprising, but when they arrive they watch the men they are there to meet get slaughtered in front of them as their ship is destroyed in orbit. They flee through the caves and end up hiding in Garak's childhood home's basement. There is an announcement that Damar was killed along with his co-conspirators and that depresses the hell out of them. On the station Sisko has to tell Odo that even though they don't like what Section 31 did they can't offer the cure to the disease to the founders since they are still at war. In Quark's a call comes in from the Grand Nagus who tells Quark he is stepping down and that Quark is the next Nagus, well that is what Quark thinks he said through all the static.
Ezri and Julian run into each other in the replimat and decide to work things out, but rather than getting together they agree just stay friends. Brunt shows up to kiss up to Quark who he believes will be the next Nagus. Quark certainly likes it, and likes the bribes even more, but he is dismayed when he learns of the changes that have happened on Ferenginar. It seems the Nagus is no longer a dictator and workers now have rights. Without telling Brunt Quark decides to only accept the job if he can remove the restrictions. Quark sells his bar to Rom for 5000 bars of latinum without a second thought, he is too distracted by concern about his homeworld.
On Cardassia the three rebels start hearing stories that Damar isn't dead and realize that revolutionary sentiment is running strong with the people so they set about to start the rebellion again. They start by setting a bomb in a Jem'Hadar barracks but things don't go well for Garak as he tries to get away. He is stopped by two Jem'Hadar so Damar steps out of the shadows to distract them while Kira shoots one and Garak stabs the other. Just in time Damar ducks and throws himself in front of civilians. He stands up and is recognized by the people. He calls for a planet wide uprising and is greeted by cheers before disappearing into the shadows.
Back on the station Sisko gets home to find Kasidy upset, it turns out she is pregnant and worried that the prophesy was about their baby. Ben reassures her though and they both seem happy. Ezri and Julian bump into each other on the way to Ops and get in the turbolift together talking about how happy they are to just be friends, but when they arrive they are kissing. Zek shows up in Quark's and just as Quark is about to tell him his restrictions on being Nagus Zek walks past and tells Rom that he will be the next Nagus. Rom is obviously taken aback, but it is clearly that Ishka is behind it. Quark is upset about the implications, but is happier after Rom agrees to give him the bar back. We end in the wardroom where news of the Dominion contraction have come through. Sisko, Martok, Ross and the Romulan representative discuss the situation and resolve that the only option is to press their advantage an attack now.
Review: Lots happened today and even more will be going down tomorrow. I have really enjoyed DS9 and I am sad to see it end, but at least it is ending as good as it has been most of the way through.
