DS9: When It Rains...

And thus begins the actual final chapter of DS9. For the first time in a while the episode didn't begin with a recap and even manages to mostly not be so intercut as to be impossible to summarize chronologically. I admit I had been kinda wondering why Martok was suddenly back in the story but the conflict between him and Gowron over how to fight the Dominion should be interesting. Also it always feels good to see Dukat taken down a few pegs and sent from the side of the Kai to be a beggar on the streets should do that pretty well. Finally the conspiracy within Starfleet to destroy the changelings is being cast as super evil, but it is hard to see why they wouldn't want something like that. I mean, I get why Bashir doesn't like it, but it really makes sense. It is too bad Odo had to be infected and be there carrier, but this is war.
We open with a discussion of the new Breen energy damping weapon and how the only ship to withstand it was a recently modified Klingon ship. Martok has directed the rest of his ships to be modified in the same way, but that does little to help the Romulans or Federation. This transitions into discussion of Damar and how he will need help fast. Sisko picks the person on his staff with vast experience in resistance, Major Kira. He convinces Kira that it is something she needs to do, and then that she will need Garak's help to even find Damar. Odo is going along too, but before he leaves Bashir convinces him to leave a sample behind to study for use as an in field organ replacement. On Bajor Kai Winn is pretty unhappy with having to lie about killing her aide and it isn't any easier with Dukat gloating about it. She refuses to let him help her with the Kosst Amojan. That night though he ignores her instructions that it is for her eyes only, but it turns out she wasn't just saying that. As soon as he starts reading he is hit in the eyes with a red light and blinded.
Back on the station Kira is given a Starfleet commission at Garak's recommendation to make it easier for the Cardassians to deal with being taught by a Bajoran. They bring along weapons and replicators at Damar's request. Next Sisko and Admiral Ross greet Chancellor Gowron who has arrived to inducted Martok into the order of Kahless. Pretty much as soon as the ceremony is complete Gowron reveals his motive, he is pulling Martok from command of the war and taking over personally. Not only that he wants to start attacking now so they can save the day and get all the glory which both Worf and Martok find pretty dumb. Dr. Bashir starts working on the sample from Odo (and missing a shot with Ezri along the way) and finds some bad news, Odo has been infected with the virus killing his people.
Odo and Kira arrive on Cardassia and are greeted by Damar who seems actually pretty happy to see them. His men are less happy though and won't shut up about how Odo condemned Bajorans to die under their rule. Kira storms off before getting in too much trouble and is pleased to find Damar has a cooling pack ready to go for her. On the station Julian is getting the run around from Starfleet medical when he tries to get Odo's records from his visit there. He gets Sisko to pull rank but the files he is sent are a clever fake. After some investigating it becomes clear there is only one explanation, Starfleet medical designed the virus to kill the changelings and infected Odo to get him to infect the great link, and it worked. On Bajor Kai Winn decides that Dukat's blindness is a judgement from the pah-wraiths and the only solution is to send him out to be a beggar until his vision returns.

Review: Even though this is another setup episode, it works better than some. the very last twists in the show are getting going now and I am looking forward to watching it all come together.
