VOY: Concerning Flight

I realize when you get an actor like John Rhys-Davies to agree to be on your television show you feel the need to write an episode around him. However, you should also probably try to make sure it is an episode that is actually good. The idea of Voyager losing a bunch of important stuff including, say, the computer core seems like an interesting idea. But when you add an element of a hologram of Leonardo running around for no good reason you have a problem. Lets take a step back for a moment, Leonardo is there because the mobile emitter is one of the items which was stolen. That thing is literally tech from the future and probably has power systems more advanced than anything they have ever seen. But instead of tearing it apart for tech the evil thief/arms merchant just lets Leonardo wander around with it. Also, it seems like they didn't get most of their stuff back and that is not big deal, I am sure they can pick of my torpedoes at the next starbase...
We open with Janeway on the holodeck with Leonardo pretty much just to show he is back. The holodeck rocks as the ship is attacked by looters. They can both beam stuff out through shields and have some tech to make automatic targeting impossible. The thieves make away with the computer core, the mobile emitter and a bunch of other stuff. And for some reason Janeway decides to be all sneaky/negotiaty rather than guns blazing which I don't really get given what she has been up to lately. On the surface she runs into Leonardo who is impressed with the prince who is sponsoring him now, and while it isn't stated, it is pretty obvious this must be the guy who stole all their stuff. Leonardo has been advancing his flying machines with the modern materials available on this world which again raises questions about why he is being allowed to do this.
Eventually Seven and Harry manage to get astrometrics to find the missing computer core and Janeway goes in with Leonardo to get it. There is some sort of field preventing transport but it evidently sucks as Janeway is able to turn the computer on and make it give off a signal that lets it get beamed out but not her or Leonardo. (Janeway lost her comm badge to a guy who Leonardo knocked out a few seconds later, not at all clear why she didn't just steal it back.) Luckily the crappy anti-transporter field also doesn't stop a site to site transport out of it leading Janeway and Leonardo to a hill where he just happened to have an experimental version of his flying machine. They take to the air and are beamed to safety. We close with a scene that I think is intended to tell us we won't be seeing Mr. Rhys-Davies again.

Review: I know I spent a lot of time complaining about how things didn't make sense either plot wise or character wise. But at the same time John Rhys-Davies is amazing as usual so I am going to give this one a point higher than it would have had otherwise.
