VOY: Year of Hell

I am really hoping the second half of this two parter is better than the first half. And not that it is terrible, but when it involves timeline alteration and serious things have happened to characters it means those things will be undone somehow it part 2. It is cool to see Janeway going full Kirk on these pathetic aliens and just flying through there space like a boss. I also really liked the villain who is willing to remove entire cultures from the timeline just to get his probably daughter back. And it isn't even clear to me that the aliens he is wiping out are responsible for his loss. The bad guys seem to be the only ones in the area interested in time destruction so I can only assume they were also the cause of the problem.
We open with the subtitle "Day 1" and with a name like Year of Hell it is apparent that we have a long way to go still. We begin with a beautiful and clearly advanced civilization being wiped out of existence by some sort of time ship in orbit around the planet. On the time ship they are discussing how the attack didn't work and they will need to wipe literally every member of the species out of the universe. On Voyager they are having a ceremony at astrometrics to celebrate the activation of the new system which will save them 5 years of flying time heading home. There is a call to the bridge though, they are under attack! By a tiny ship unable to damage them in any way. The captain of the ship is hostile and threatens them with destruction if they don't turn around, but Janeway says fuck that and flies past him. They run into the species who in theory runs this part of space and they are happy to work with Voyager and appologize for the attack, the weaklings who tried to stop the ship used to run this part of space, but that was a long time ago. Suddenly a time distortion hits and the friendly dudes disappear and the hostile dudes ship expands and is suddenly a big threat.
The ships torpedoes are slightly out of sync with time so go straight through Voyagers shields doing lots of damage. Janeway manages to destroy the enemy by dropping torpedoes as mines but they have heavy damage. We start jumping forward and things keep getting worse for Voyager. They lose whole decks, Tuvok is blinded, but they keep pushing forward. We also see on the timeship that the captain is obsessed with getting probably his daughter back and despite the massive success of the second attempt he wants to push for perfection. Eventually Seven comes up with a way to shield the ship from the time torpedoes and the attackers back off for a bit.
But just as another attack starts a time wave passes over them and the enemies turn back into the toothless non-warp ships we saw in the beginning. And Voyager is shielded from the effects so they get to watch the universe change. It seems their shielding is what caused the bad result and the timeship shows up and steals Paris and Chakotay before shooting out a beam to erase the ship from time. But it turns out the time ship is hella slow so they warp out which rips off most of the outer hull. Janeway orders all but the senior staff to evactuate in the escape pods as part one ends.

Review: There were parts that seemed a bit annoying, specifically the references to the Titanic since the movie came out a month later than the episode which I guessed before looking it up. But overall a solid episode of Trek.

7 out of 10
